Hogwarts Legacy Wand Customization & Selection
In Hogwarts Legacy, the wand is your weapon and your most important tool. The wand allows you to channel your magic and target it by casting spells.
Find out here how to get your wand in Hogwarts Legacy, how to customize it, and what wand handles are all about.
How to Get a Wand in Hogwarts Legacy?
As in the Harry Potter books and movies, you can get your wand in Hogwarts Legacy from Ollivander’s wand shop. In Hogwarts Legacy, Ollivander’s has a branch in Hogsmeade that you visit. So you’re not traveling to Diagon Alley in London to get your wand.
Quite early in the gameplay of Hogwarts Legacy, you will receive a quest that will send you to Hogsmeade, where you will then receive your wand. The wand ceremony appears to be similar to that of Harry Potter.
First, Ollivander hands you two wands that don’t fit you. After that, Ollivander will give you a box without commenting any further. You open this box and can then create your individual wand. So the Ollivander statement “The wand chooses the wizard…” from Harry Potter doesn’t quite apply here.

The owner of the Ollivander Hogsmeade branch, who is briefly seen in the official launch trailer, is in all likelihood an ancestor of Garrick Ollivander. Garrick Ollivander is the owner of Ollivander’s in Diagon Alley at the time the Harry Potter stories are set. The official WizardingWorld website says the following about the family relationship:
We know that Ollivander’s wand shop is a family-run business which has been creating and providing wands for young wizards since 382 BC. So, that must be a lot of Ollivanders! In one shot of the trailer, we see an elderly wizard (with an interesting pin) provide our character with his wand – and we surely must assume it is an ancestor of Garrick from Harry Potter’s era.
WizardingWorld.comWand Customization Options
In Hogwarts Legacy, you can create and customize your own individual wand. When creating, you can choose between different options in the following categories:
- Wand Style
- Wood Type (including wand length and wand flexibility)
- Core
Wand Style
In the first step you can set the style, i.e. the appearance, of your wand. Here you have 8 options available, whereby you can choose between three different colors for each option. So in total there are 24 wand models to choose from.
The 8 styles with their respective colors are:

Wood Type
The second step is to choose the wood your wand will be made of, the length of your wand, and how flexible it will be.
- You can choose any value between 9.5 inches and 14.5 inches for the length of your wand.
- For flexibility, you can choose a value on a scale that ranges from Quite Bendy to Unyielding.
- You can choose from these different types of wood for your wand: Acacia, Alder, Apple, Ash, Aspen, Beech, Blackthorn, Black Walnut, Cedar, Cherry, Chestnut, Cypress, Dogwood, Ebony, Elder, Elm, English Oak, Fir, Hawthorn, Hazel, Holly, Hornbeam, Larch, Laurel, Mahogany, Maple, Pear, Pine, Poplar, Red Oak, Redwood, Rowan, Silver Lime, Spruce, Sycamore, Vine, Walnut, Willow, Yew.
The type of wood, length, and flexibility of your wand does not affect its appearance in any way. This seems to be a purely role-playing aspect.
Core
Last but not least, you choose the core of your wand. Here you have the following three options:
- Dragon Heartstring: Dragon heartstring that serves as the core of a wand, known for producing powerful magic.
- Phoenix Feather: The feather of a phoenix that serves as the core of a wand, capable of producing a great range of magic.
- Unicorn Hair: The hair of a unicorn that severs as the core of a wand, known for producing consistent magic.
The material of the core does not affect the appearance of your wand in any way. This seems to be a purely role-playing aspect.
Do Wand Style, Wood and Core Affect Gameplay?
Which style, wood and core you choose for your wand in Hogwarts Legacy doesn’t seem to affect gameplay. No specific values or similar that differ are displayed for the individual options. So the wand doesn’t seem to have any effect on casting spells or other features.
Therefore, it is safe to assume that your choice is purely cosmetic and that the wand will always function exactly the same, regardless of its properties.
What Are Wand Handles?
In Hogwarts Legacy, there are different things that you can collect. One of the collection categories is Wand Handles, of which there will apparently be 42 different ones in the game. You will probably be able to use these handles to customize your wand’s appearance. Whether the handles have more than a cosmetic use is not known.
Wand handles are available as rewards from quests, among other things. For example, a Wand Handle called “Avian – Grey” is obtained by completing the quest “Flying Off the Shelves”.

Wands of Famous Harry Potter Characters
The traits you choose for your wand have no impact on gameplay in Hogwarts Legacy. But they have an all the more important role-playing aspect. With the choice of your wand, you can give your character even more depth.
For example, if you plan to become evil in Hogwarts Legacy, you may choose different traits than if you plan to play a lovable and helpful character.
In the following list, you will find the wands of some well-known witches and wizards from the Harry Potter universe, which can probably also be built in Hogwarts Legacy in this or a similar way.
| Character | Wand Wood | Wand Core | Wand Length |
|---|---|---|---|
| Harry Potter (Wand #1) | Holly | Phoenix Feather | 11″ |
| Lord Voldemort | Yew | Phoenix Feather | 13½” |
| Ron Weasley (2. Stab) | Willow | Unicorn Hair | 14″ |
| Hermine Granger | Vine | Dragon Heartstring | 10 ¾” |
| Draco Malfoy | Hawthorn | Unicorn Hair | 10″ |
| Cedric Diggory | Ash | Unicorn Hair | 12¼” |
| Peter Pettigrew | Chestnut | Dragon Heartstring | 9¼” |
| Viktor Krum | Hornbeam | Dragon Heartstring | 10 ¼” |
