6 December 2022 - A mashup of genres

Bethesda's Todd Howard recently said in a podcast how the new Indiana Jones game is a mix of genres, not wanting to go into specifics: "I will just say it's a mash-up. It's unique. It isn't one thing, intentionally, so it does a lot of different things that myself and the folks at Machine Games have wanted to do in a game. So it's a unique thing."

Indiana Jones Game Release Date Speculation

At the time of writing, there is no official confirmed release date for the Indiana Jones game, but in this article, you’ll find all (if any) information that the developer shared, as well as some speculation from Ginx on when we could see it launch.

Bethesda said in a tweet announcing the game in January 2021, "it'll be some time before we have more to reveal," which isn't surprising given that the company is also working on Starfield and Elder Scrolls 6. However, because this is being handled by MachineGames, the creators of Wolfenstein New Order, rather than Bethesda Game Studios themselves, MachineGames will likely be going full steam ahead with the development of Indiana Jones.

At this point, we anticipate that the game will be released in 2023. With a new Indiana Jones movie also releasing on the 30th June 2023, some fans speculate that the game might release alongside it to capitalize on the marketing opportunities as well, so the tail end of 2023 seems to be the period to watch out for.

Indiana Jones Game - Trailer

Sitting at only 33 seconds long, the Indiana Jones game teaser trailer features only cinematic footage, showcasing some objects on a desk along with the famous whip and Fedora hat. A significant portion of this game is still unknown because neither the gameplay nor the level design is mentioned.

Indiana Jones Game - Platforms

Microsoft acquired Bethesda Game Studios in 2020, with the acquisition being made final on the 9th March 2021. And when it comes to any company that Microsoft owns, they tend to keep things quite close to the chest, and Bethesda games are no different.

The Xbox Series X/S and PC are now the only platforms for Bethesda's upcoming games as of the completion of this acquisition. Naturally, Indiana Jones will do the same, meaning that it won't be possible for anyone to play this game on any other console, such as the PS5.

Indiana Jones Game - Leaks and more

Although the teaser trailer was so short, and the news on the game has run quite dry since its announcement, there are a few additional hints as to the game's potential direction we can glean from the trailer. Fans have also taken to breaking down every detail of the short cinematic to speculate on a few possibilities, with one example being a ticket for a flight to Rome that bears the year 1937.

This would put the game's events somewhere between those of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and Raiders of the Lost Ark, some fans speculate. Given the date, we assume that this took place during Benito Mussolini's rule as the Italian fascist leader.

The announcement trailer goes on to showcase various textbooks, including Myths That Made, Forbidden Stones, and Ancient Circles, just before ending on the whip and hat. These descriptive books suggest that Indiana Jones is looking for a different catholic artifact with a spiritual significance, which would fit with the historical setting of ancient Rome.
